Hitchiti Experimental Forest
On Wednesday, November 2, 2011, the second portion of Dr. Rood's Environmental Science class went hiking at the Hitchiti Experimental Forest. While hiking through the woods, we found some wild ginger. Native Americans used wild ginger to make concoctions to bring on menstruation and regulate irregular heart beat. Some tribes used the wild ginger to make a liquid to pour in their ear to relieve ear aches. Other uses of wild ginger include relieving fevers by inducing a fever in the patients and treating snake bite. Hence its common name of Canada snakeroot. Native Americans also used wild ginger to flavor their food. Overall, wild ginger has a wide variety of uses.
